In-Spire

James Ort

Mansle Gardens

The pyramidal sculpture of “In-spire” reflects the shape of the Whitemark on Watlington Hill. The Whitemark is a local landmark created by Edward Horne in 1764. When viewed from the right place, it appears to be the missing spire of St Leonard’s church.

Cast in bronze, In-Spire features elements that reflect the diversity and community of Watlington. Can you spot; the Red Kite, the Whitemark, the poem and the town hall

James Ort is an Oxfordshire based sculptor who is a regular participant in Watlington ArtWeek, and runs a local art teaching space – Phoenix Studios. James acknowledges the inspiration of his late grandfather, Brian Price Thomas, who used to illustrate children’s books, and the value of using art as a storytelling medium for all generations.
