Meander

Joseph Hillier

Willow Close

Reflecting on his time in Watlington, the artist, Joseph Hillier states:

“A lot of people talk about the geology, the fact of where it is in the Chilterns. The parish has a bit of the hill and a bit of the lowland below and that has formed its identity.

The other thing that has been interesting is the clear chalk stream which emerges from springs to meander beautifully through the landscape. Chalk downland is a rare environment which supports unique orchids and butterflies. All of this is worth celebrating.” …

“Meander captures the flow of nature. As an artist I appreciate the curves of a stream. I’m always trying to create things of beauty like that. What nature just does by the laws of physics.

In these pieces, I am using the colours of the buildings in the town. The clay, flint and chalk. Meander is the colour of the pale chalk which lies beneath the landscape.”
